Lock Cylinder Replacement
Lock Cylinder Replacement – In Many Cases, the Entire Lock Does Not Need to Be Replaced
Many people confuse the lock cylinder with the entire locking mechanism. The lock cylinder — also known as a euro cylinder or barrel — is the part where the key is inserted and which operates the lock itself. The handle, cylinder protector ring, and lock body are separate components. Lock cylinder replacement can usually be performed independently without disturbing the entire locking system, making it a faster, simpler, and more cost-effective solution than a full lock replacement.
FAQ – Lock Cylinder Replacement
When is lock cylinder replacement necessary?
The most common reasons include: lost keys, keys falling into unauthorized hands, moving into a new property, malfunctioning or sticking locks, and attempted break-ins. In the latter case, lock cylinder replacement is especially important, as drilling or manipulation-based opening methods may cause internal damage to the cylinder even if no visible signs are present from the outside.
Can the lock cylinder be replaced without the original key?
Yes. If the key has been lost and the door is locked, we first open the door using non-destructive methods and then carry out the lock cylinder replacement during the same visit.
Does it matter which lock cylinder we choose?
Absolutely. Cheap entry-level lock cylinders provide minimal protection — an experienced burglar can open them within minutes without leaving visible traces. This can also create serious insurance-related problems. During lock cylinder replacement, we recommend installing at least a mid-range, MABISZ-certified lock cylinder.
How do you determine the required lock cylinder size?
The exact size can only be determined on-site after removing the old cylinder. Manufacturers define cylinder dimensions starting from 60 mm, usually in 5 mm increments. This is why we cannot provide an exact quote over the phone — we first need to inspect the existing lock.
Does the type of door matter?
Yes. Lift-handle doors, multi-point locking systems, wooden, metal, plastic, security, and HiSec doors all require different approaches. A simple lock cylinder replacement can usually be completed within 10–20 minutes, while replacing a multi-point locking system may take more than an hour.
How Do We Work?
1. On-Site Inspection and Measurement
During lock cylinder replacement, we measure the length of the old cylinder and inspect the type of door.
2. Removing the Fixing Screw
By slightly turning the key, we remove the fixing screw.
3. Removing the Old Lock Cylinder
We carefully extract the old cylinder.
4. Installing the New Lock Cylinder
During lock cylinder replacement, we install a precisely sized cylinder with the appropriate security level — a MABISZ-certified model protected against drilling and picking.
5. Fixing and Testing
We secure the new cylinder back into place and test it multiple times from both inside and outside.
6. Handover
We hand over the new keys and explain everything you need to know about maintenance.
Lock cylinder replacement is a fast and efficient solution — when performed properly, the door lock will function reliably again, and previous keys will no longer work.
